The beautiful sounds of office life.
This turned out to be a light fixture, in which a few of the fluorescent tubes had been unscrewed and left resting loose on the metal grating. Sound is glass-on-metal whenever the grating receives vibrations from the nearby HVAC system.
It has now been silenced by the cubicle occupants below, with masterful laziness, by using masking tape to prop the glass up off the grating.
